I am Stefano Massa, a psychologist and EMDR therapist, BDP member since 2018. My training began in Applied Psychology and developed further into Neuroscience — with an MSc in Psychology of Cognitive Processes (2026) — and continues today through a 2nd-Level Master’s degree in Clinical Neuropsychology of Adults and the Elderly at the University of Chieti (expected 2027). I work exclusively online with adults and couples, in English and Italian.
From the beginning, my training has developed along two complementary directions: an interest in the clinical and relational dimension, and a parallel focus on cognitive processes and how the mind works. Over time, I explored different theoretical models and therapeutic tools, eventually finding in EMDR an approach that integrates subjective experience with neurobiological processes. This orientation gradually shaped my way of working: a clinical perspective grounded in each person’s history, while attentive to the mechanisms through which that history takes form in the present.
Over the years, I have worked across a range of clinical settings — from the Jungian Institute ATANOR to the San Salvatore Psychiatric Hospital in L’Aquila, as well as forensic psychology contexts and the American Medical Center in Landstuhl, where I served as Clinical Psychologist and Head of Department between 2023 and 2024. It was through in-depth clinical work with EMDR — and by closely observing how trauma can reorganise the nervous system — that something began to shift in a more defined direction. From that point, I felt the need to go further, to better understand what happens in the brain. What started as a clinical intuition gradually became a scientific conviction: understanding how the brain works enriches the therapeutic relationship and allows for more precise work.
Clinical neuropsychology focuses on the relationship between brain function and behaviour. It is applied to the assessment and rehabilitation of cognitive difficulties — including attention, memory, and executive functions — that may arise from neurological conditions, brain injury, ageing, or neurodegenerative diseases. As I continue my specialization, this perspective has become increasingly central, shaping how I listen, assess, and work with each person.
I do not work by applying a standard method to every person. My aim is to understand how symptoms, personal history, the body, and relational patterns are interconnected — and from there, to build a path that is clinically rigorous, grounded in reality, and deeply human.
"Every trauma leaves a mark in the nervous system. Therapy can help you understand that mark, process it and gradually reclaim your freedom."
Every person arrives with a unique history. For this reason, the therapeutic plan is not built around labels, but around assessment, goals, symptoms, resources and the pace that the person can realistically sustain.
A certified protocol for trauma, PTSD and distressing memories. Bilateral stimulation supports the nervous system in reprocessing experiences that remained emotionally "stuck".
A depth-oriented perspective that explores dreams, symbols, archetypes and recurring relational patterns to support a more authentic understanding of the self.
A structured approach to identify and modify dysfunctional thoughts, behaviours and emotional responses involved in anxiety, depression and self-sabotage.
A safe space to work on communication, conflict, emotional distance, trust and repetitive dynamics that keep the couple trapped in the same patterns.
A careful evaluation of symptoms, history and functioning. Assessment provides direction and makes the therapeutic plan more precise and measurable.
The therapeutic process is reviewed over time. Goals, progress and difficulties are discussed so the work remains aligned with your real needs.
Different symptoms require different clinical lenses. Below are the main areas in which I work.
Support for generalised anxiety, panic attacks, anticipatory anxiety, phobias and excessive rumination.
Treatment of single-event trauma, complex trauma, traumatic grief and post-traumatic symptoms through EMDR and stabilisation work.
Work on depressive episodes, chronic sadness, loss of motivation, self-criticism and feelings of emptiness.
Support for couples facing conflict, distance, betrayal, communication breakdown or recurring emotional disconnection.
Therapeutic work on behavioural, relational and substance-related addictive patterns, with attention to underlying trauma and emotional regulation.
Clinical attention to symptoms expressed through the body, with integrated mind-body work and careful diagnostic assessment.
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro. It is recommended by major health organisations for the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress. In clinical work, it is not used as a technique in isolation, but within a careful therapeutic relationship, proper assessment and stabilisation.
